FULL DISCLOSURE (MY WORLD)

I’m a member of a secret society—one that uses the concept of alternative history to slowly awaken the masses to the covert doings of individuals of this world and beyond. It’s a weapon stronger than you may think; for one cannot save a world nestled in a box, strategically dormant to the realities of their existence. By exposing the masses to the idea of an alternative history it will help to soften the blow felt when the world’s dirty laundry can no longer be contained.

Writers such as myself, producers, film directors, etc. have been doing this for years—preparing the masses for the inevitable. Think back to the Rod Serling’s 1959—1964 series the Twilight Zone or The Mercury Theatre’s October 30, 1938 broadcast of The War of the Worlds over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio; where actor Orson Welles continues to frighten the hell out of me. I knew then, that in order to shake the psyche and affect the consciousness of my brethren; I would have to do it today just as they did back then.

The debate over what’s true and what’s false in literature is never ending, primarily due to the fact that all written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit is based on some truth. Like that of a surreptitious military operation, the goal of argumentative writing is to tactically persuade your audience that your ideas are valid beyond the method by which you’ve chosen to relay your story. The Greek philosopher Aristotle divided the means of persuasion, appeals, into three distinct categories—Ethos, Pathos, Logos.

Examples of this are infinite—Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus, George Orwell’s 1984, Milton William Cooper’s Behold A Pale Horse, Jack Finney’s The Body Snatchers, David Seltzer’s The Omen, H.G. Wells The War of the Worlds, Thomas Michael Keneally’s Schindler’s Ark, William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist, Richard Condon's The Manchurian Candidate, Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s The Illuminatus! Trilogy, Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity, Robert A. Heinlein's The Puppet Masters, Jules Gabriel Verne’s A Journey to the Center of the Earth, Erich von Däniken’s Chariots of the Gods, not to mention both the Writer’s Block Trilogy and the Conspirator’s Odyssey Series to which I’m taking the liberty of weighing in. However unquestionably interminable these examples may be, all remain but the tiniest of pebbles dropped haphazardly into a massive basin of still water.

Words I liken to keys, which unlock the incomprehensible doors of the matrix we were conceived. However, it is a choice the individual must make to read, to absorb, to beware, and to prepare.

MY OFFICE HOLDS MY MAGIC (#1)

I write surrounded by the many inspirations I hold dear. These inspirations relentlessly pull me forward. Their natural aptitude for mental stimulation is the grip that propels me onward. Their hold as firm as the affinity I have for my needful things: 1.) Buford, my beloved 1938 Underwood Universal/Champion Portable typewriter, 2.) the rare ribbon I need for said typewriter, 3.) the lead from my #2 pencil, 4.) the assortment of notepads and audio recorders I use, 5.) the paper on which I write, 6.) the paper on which I type, and 7.) the ink with which I use to paint the world. My office is both my sanctuary and my peace. It is the singular space that holds my magic.

A TRUE WRITER NEVER GIVES UP

Never give up. Believe me when I tell you rejection is an imperative test of one’s character. Many of us continually submit the same manuscript until it is accepted. The stress of that idiotic endeavor wholly stifling a writer’s would-be career because during this deep-dive into the abyss of the literary rabbit hole, nothing else matters. Absolutely nothing. Neither reading endlessly, which is any writers North Star or writing the stories that could have been written. Some also choose to do a more polished draft before sending it out again. Only a select few, however, will learn from their lessons of submissions, to write a completely new book or to rewrite, as many times as necessary, the promising manuscript that continues to be rejected. What they all have in common is a persistence to never give up on their dream; a dream that has elevated them from writer to best-selling author.

We, bibliophiles, know these authors; their stories and characters very well. They have written some of the most critically praised and commercially successful books of all time. In some cases, their enormous sales were so consistent that they even kept their publishers afloat. Yet in spite of this phenomenal success, every single one of these best-selling authors was initially rejected. Literary agents and publishers informed them in an endless stream of rejection letters that nobody would be interested in reading their book.

"Does your mind endlessly feel like an outcast in a fog of noise? Try typing something. Anything. If that noise stops, you're a writer."

Don’t seek to limit yourselves by believing the traditional publishing industry is a bridge only a select few are privy to cross. With persistence, a true belief in the power of your words, a broad knowledge of the industry itself, a bit of innovative strategy, and a hell of a lot of luck; you’ll eventually see that silver lining by which to exploit in order to get your ass on and to the other side of that bridge. And when you get there, never forget where you once were. Through your example, let everyone know why we love the written word. Why we write. Why we put ink to paper. Why we dare to proclaim ourselves storytellers in a world where books and reading are damn near second to the moving story. Why we covertly, overtly, and strategically attempt to journey all back to a time when the imagination was our collective muse.

Books are inanimate objects and only animate when a reader lightly peels back that first page and allows the story to unfold—lighting a robust fire under the ass of a reader’s dormant imagination. We are authors! We were once gods of villages at a time children and elders, nightly, sat at our feet anxious to lend an ear to our words. Let them know that supporting our efforts in every way is a noble undertaking. That modern-day entertainment in and of itself wouldn’t amount to shit without the ink we use to paint the picture. Again, never give up!
